UT System Statement
UT Regents Pursue Patent Infringement Litigation in United States District Court

March 11, 2005

AUSTIN – The Board of Regents of The University of Texas System on Thursday (March 10) authorized litigation to enforce the "character pattern recognition and communications apparatus" patent covering software invented by Dr. George Kondraske, professor of electrical and biomedical engineering at UT Arlington.

The litigation was filed today (March 11) in U.S. District Court, Western District of Texas. The UT System Board of Regents holds the intellectual property rights to the technology (Patent No. 4,674,112).

The Texas Attorney General authorized the board to hire the law firm Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP as outside legal counsel on the matter.

The UT System will have no further comment as litigation proceeds.
